Humboldt, TN Community Profile

streetCommunity Profile

A mix of income levels, young and old, singles, families, and single parents living in a diverse range of housing, owner-occupied and rental in a working class town with blue collar and white collar presence. Ours is a city that commutes to other population centers for employment yet also finds commuters coming into our workplaces…industrial, retail, healthcare, entertainment, tourism, and education.

Education
Pre K-12 is a city based system…also the Humboldt Higher Education Center houses four institutions (Jackson State Community College, Tennessee Technology Center, University of Tennessee at Martin, University of Memphis).

Cooperation
There are numerous examples of a cooperative “can-do” attitude among the citizens of the City. Witness the West Tennessee Strawberry festival, now in its 74th year, and most recently judged “the Best in West Tennessee” by readers of The Tennessee Magazine. This is a Festival planned and presented primarily by volunteers.
The businesses, citizens, and the City partnered with West Tennessee HealthCare and a bequest from a local citizen to build the Dunlap Rehabilitation Center and Humboldt General Hospital Conference Center, a 400 person conference facility used by groups from throughout our county and community-at-large.
The Humboldt Higher Education Center, mentioned above, is also a cooperative effort, between Jackson State Community College, the City of Humboldt, and contributions from local businesses and citizens, that transformed a “no longer used” elementary school into a gem for higher education.

Retail
A unique mix of national chain (Walmart, Goody's, Catos, Dollar General, Fred’s and others) yet with a number of locally owned specialty shops (a gift shop, a shoe store, a “birding” craft shop, several restaurants with family recipes, antique and auction center and many others that provide a diverse and closely knit networking system.

Entertainment
Locally owned “3 screen” movie theater, affordable and with recent releases…draws a multi county and community audience.
Plenty of restaurants with “wide variety” menus and some with catering
A winery, with locally inspired vintages… hosts weddings and receptions, company and family outings, civic gatherings, and more.
A regional art center… showcases two donated family collections and a mixture, throughout the year, of local artist presentations.
Two museums that promote local offerings and a regional library with books, tapes, and a computer bank…also has a room dedicated to children.
Meeting rooms to host from 25 to 400.
